Hello from Indiana!

Post to this forum to introduce yourself to this forum if you are new here. You might want to include some information about the work you are doing or planning to do with QCAD.

Hello from Indiana!

Post by Nate_the_Ace » Mon May 05, 2025 3:01 am

Hello everyone,

My name is Nathan and I am here because I needed a CAD program that WASN'T designed for parametric solid part modelling. No, I needed a competent 2D drafting software package that ran on my system, Linux, and wasn't an AutoDesk product. What am I doing that needs something so specific? I am drafting up cave maps from in-field survey data gathered by myself and a small team of surveyors in various caves around southern Indiana. And let me tell you, all it took was one 15 minute session with the software to know that what I had found in QCAD was the perfect solution to our very niche problem. To create maps, many of us would toil away and 15 year old Adobe software to be able to scale and rotate scans of our handwritten field notes. This was buggy at best, and a HUGE time waste at worst. I am currently developing an SOP write up for my fellow cavers to use when they want to create their own maps using QCAD. I have developed a template that uses layers to manage all of the different kinds of data that is conveyed in our surveys, as well as a standard block library for any caver to use.

Thanks for being the perfect solution to our problem, I can't wait to dig in even more with automated data handling with CSV imports and similar things. Very Cool.

-Nathan
