Toggle buttons for sublayers

Post by AnobiumPunctatum » Tue Feb 04, 2025 8:02 pm

Hello all,

I am using QCad 3.32 on Mac OS 15.3
I really like the sublayers feature of QCad. In my opinion it will be really nice if you can use the upper layer status to change the status of all sublayers with one klick; for example klick on "Hide" to hide all sublayers. If you than want to show one of the sublayers you have to click on the sublayer button.

Kind regards
Christian

Hi,

I think that what you propose is already the case except for Show/Hide.

Sub-layers inhered the Snappable, Plottable, Frozen and Locked properties from their parent.
A sub-layer property can be inherited or individually forced.
To hide all sub-layers one can freeze the parent.

 Hide/Show is layer individual and that opens up other perspectives in combination with Freeze.

See Application Preferences .. Widgets .. Layer List to enable certain columns.

Remark that:
Normally, layers are not intended to group things that belong together in the design, that is done with Blocks.
Layers are intended to control the attributes: Color, weight and Type of the entities that live on them. See: Working with Layers
Intended to group things that should look/print alike: Red and dashed; Black and thick continuous; ...
In that perspective, sub-layers are of lesser meaning/importance.

Sometimes I use a Hybrid too, grouping each design trial/step/level under a different top layer.
Typically my top layers are empty or have common content.
Their sub-layers are then as intended, as explained above.
Blocks have less flexibility for that, less controllable attributes. :(
Also, grouping for example a first, second and third floor in Blocks is counter-advised, also called 'Massive Blocks'.

I also used layers to group things for repeatedly selecting the entities that live on it (YC/YD, former Y+/Y-).
That is no longer required using the Entities Selection Groups tool package.

Hi ,

you're right. It will be nice, if the show/Hide toggle has the same functionality as the other buttons.
Thanx for the hint to the add on. I will give it a try.

I think that that is not a design choice.
The developer of QCAD probably follows the common behavior seen in various CAD systems.

As explained, use the Freeze attribute instead.
